nambiNambi: Nambi is the alpha female of the community. She spends a lot of time with the males and she is confident around people. She demands respect and you can often hear her giving long bouts of indignant screams if she is ever attacked by a young male. Nambi is getting old and it has been 8 years since her last of four children: Andy, Musa, Nora.
Birthyear: 1965 (±3 yrs)

musaMusa: Nambi’s son (and brother to Nora and Night). He is a young, large, powerful adult male on the cusp of maturity, coming up fast in the hierarchy. His mother seems shows a lot more interest in his career than he does, and despite her attempts to encourage him into the male political arena he seems much happier hanging out with his feet up watching the world go by. Name means "banana"(used for making liquor).
Birthyear: 1991 (±1 yr)

nightNight: Nambi’s youngest daughter. Night is very inquisitive and shows an interest in what the researchers are doing. She also seems to love cameras and is quite a little poser! She has been running around on her own for many years now and is still number one princess to Nambi, who will occassoinally pick her up and carry her down the forest trails.
Birthyear: 2003

nickNick: The current alpha male of the community. Nick often displays through the forest, bending saplings and drumming on tree buttresses to remind everyone how strong he is! Nick battled with Zefa and Duane for a year before being accepted as alpha male.
Birthyear: 1982 (±1 yr)

zefaZefa: Zefa is a large, strong adult male. He rose to alpha male very briefly in 2005, but Duane, helped by others including Nick, attacked him and he lost the top position. Zefa has always been more of a beta male and will most likely team up with another male to challenge a more dominant male. He's recently been seen cosying up to Musa.
Birthyear: 1982

rachelRachel: Rachel’s mother Ruda died when she was just 4 years old. We were worried she would not survive, but her brother Bob has done a fantastic job of raising her. She is very confident around people and is easily recognisable from her fat belly and grey beard. She still spend much of her time with Bob.
Birthyear: 1997

karoKaro: Karo is the daughter of Kwera and sister to Kwezi. She is very playful and often tries to intimidate researchers with small displays of stamping, shaking branches and throwing small sticks. She had terrible screaming tantrums when she was being weaned, but since the arrival of Kwera’s new baby she is much better behaved!
Birthyear: 2001

kumiKumi: Kumi is the youngest daughter of Kalema and sister to Bahati and Klaus. Kumi is a very distinctive young chimp and researchers affectionately know her as ‘Kumi cone-head’. She is playful and can often be found wrestling with others.
Birthyear: 2000

kalemaKalema: A central female who is frequently seen alone or in small female parties close to camp. Easily recognized by her injured right hand. In the early 1990’s she was in full estrous for over three years. The field assistants thought she was barren, so when she finally had a child, they named it Bahati, meaning “chance” or “luck”. She now has a second child, called Kumi. Named for Gladys Kalema. Bahati emigrated a couple of years ago but has been found in the new Waibra community.
Birthyear: 1980 (±2 yrs)

FrankFrank: Frank’s the young troublemaker in the community – the middle child of Flora and older brother to Faida (girl, 5 years old). He has been independent for many years, preferring to hang out with his older brother Fred (17 years old plus/minus 1 year) and the other older boys. While he’s keen on playing, it almost always seems to end up in some sort of fight in which he is the chief instigator and which frequently gets him into hot water. He recently got into a fight in which he cut his face badly - giving him the affectionate nickname of Frankenstein, despite this he hasn't slowed down in the slightest and seems determined to work his way up the male rankings in record time!
Birthyear: 1999 (±1 year)

JamesJames: James is an alert and active little 5 year old who enjoys scrambling around with his older sister Janet and mother Janie. He's getting to the age where his mother might have a new baby soon but as a sociable fellow who enjoys playing with the babies he'll probably love having another new playmate.
Birthyear: May 2006

kathyKathy: The youngest daughter of Kutu, and younger sister to Kato (male 18years), Kana (female 13years) and Kasigwa (male 8years). She created a lot of excitement in the community when she arrived at just a day or so old, and she's been a lively addition who always seems to have a huge smile on her face. For a while when she was born her brother Kasigwa, who wasn't at all keen on giving up his status as the focus of his mother's attention, forced his poor mother to carry both of them around at the same time!
Birthyear: July 2006

OaklandOakland: A recently immigrated and very calm young female she created quite a stir when she arrived as for many years most of our adult females have had young infants and the availability of a attractive new young lady with no commitments had the boys' attention from day one. She seems to have been taken under the wing of Nambi, the dominant female, and has been settling in very nicely.
Birthyear: 1994 (±1 year)

SquibsSquibs: With his protruding lower lip, Squibs looks like he’s permanently in a sulk over something, but is quite a laid back guy who's not above joining in the wrestling and chasing games with the young juvenile chimps. He arrived with Beatrice who has recently been confirmed as his mother through DNA analysis. This was highly unusual as he was already practically independent at the time and has integrated extremely well into the male social scene. One of the keen hunters in the community, Squibs can usually be found up in the front chasing the Black and White Colobus monkeys through the precariously high canopy branches.
Birthyear: 1991 (±1 year)

Sadly no longer with us

bwobaBwoba: was a medium-ranking adult male, who despite his name meaning 'fearing', was very confident around humans.
Birthyear: 1987 (±1 yrs)
Died: 2011

tinkaTinka: Tinka was an old disabled gentleman who passed away at the grand old age of 60+ years. Snare injuries left both of his hands permenantly twisted which meant he had to walk on his wrists rather than his knuckles, causing his back to hunch. Despite his difficulties he is a social chimp and is often groomed by the other males.
Birthyear: 1960 (±5 yr)

Died: 2011
